THE PAST INDEFINITE TENSE

Formation: VII (Participle II)

Using:

1) to express a finished action in the past: I left school in 1975.

2) to express past actions which follow each other in a story:

Ann came into the room. She put off her coat and sat down on the chair.

Note: It is often used with adverbials of past time:

last year (spring, month), five years ago, yesterday, the day before yesterday, in 1949, in April, in summer, in the evening, at noon.

# SPELLING # THE FORMATION OF PARTICIPLE II (of regular verbs):

1) by ending -ed (or -d, if the verb ends in mute «e»):

work — worked, dance — danced

2) the final «y» is changed into «i» before -ed if it is preceded by a consonant:

try — tried

3) the final «y» is not changed if it is preceded by a vowel:

play — played

4) the final consonant is doubled if it is preceded by a short stressed vowel:

drop — dropped

//exception: opened

5) the final consonant «l» is always doubled before the ending -ed:

travel - travelled
