to have is used only in the Indefinite Tenses

to have got — is not used in the Past Indefinite Tense as a rule.

Unit 2. Family

EXPRESSIONS WITH THE VERB «TO HAVE»:

- no article is used

to have breakfast — снідати

to have lunch — мати другий сніданок

to have dinner — обідати

to have supper — вечеряти

to have tea — випити чай

- indefinite article a is used

to have a meal — попоїсти

to have a snack — перекусити

to have a look — поглянути

to have a smoke — покурити

to have a rest — перепочити

to have a talk — поговорити

to have a shower (bath) — приймати душ (ванну)

Note:

to have a good time — добре проводити час

The verb to have in expressions is used in all tenses required.

Exercise 2. Complete the following sentences using the correct form of suitable expressions from the box:

to have a baby, to have a swim, to have a nice time, to have a bath, to have a party, to have a chat, to have a good journey, to have a rest, to have a cigarette, to have a look, to have a meal

  1. Ann likes to keep fit, so she ... every day.

# SPELLING # THE FORMATION OF THE POSSESSIVE CASE:

  1. by ending apostrophe (´) and -s, with singular nouns:

Kate´s friend;

  1. if the noun ends in -s, -ss, -x — by ending only apostrophe (´) or apostrophe (´) and -s:

James´ coat or James´s coat; Marx´ work or Marx´s work;

  1. by ending only apostrophe (´), with plural nouns:

the students´ marks;

  1. if it is a whole group of words — by ending apostrophe (´) and -s to the last noun:

Ann and Mary´s room.

Exercise 3. Join the following pairs of two nouns using the suitable cases: common or possessive:

  1. the eyes/the cat
  2. the top/the page
  3. the success/the company
  4. the garden/our ne
    ighbours
  5. the wedding/Jane and Tom
  6. the new theatre/the city
  7. the newspaper/today
  8. the name/this street
  9. the leg/this table
  10. the tail/the dog

Exercise 5. Combine the given two sentences into one using the complex Object (as in the Model):

MODEL:

Mary opened the window. I saw it. I saw Mary open the window.

  1. Peter took my pen. I saw it.
  2. He ran to the river. I saw it.
  3. The girl smiled. I noticed it.
  4. The children shouted in the next room. I heard it.
  5. She played the violin. My brother heard it.
  6. The man tried to open the door. We saw it.
  7. They got into a taxi. He saw it.
  8. Somebody knocked at the door. We heard it.
  9. I made a snow-ball. They watched it.
  10. She went away. Nobody noticed it.

Exercise 6. Change the following complex sentences into simple ones using the Complex Object:

  1. Mother thinks that he is a good engineer.
  2. I expect that you will come in time.
  3. He supposes that his friends will help him.
  4. I watched them as they played in the yard.
  5. My wish is that you should tell me about it.
  6. They expect that their team will win the game.
  7. My sister supposed that he is about twenty.
  8. Pete desires that he should stop smoking.
  9. I know that she is very modest.
  10. He believes that she is at home now.

Exercise 7. Translate into English using the Complex Object:

  1. Я помітив, що вона відкрила вікно.
  2. Я чула, як співали діти.
  3. Ми помітили, що він встав і вийшов із кімнати.
  4. Я хочу, щоб ви зробили це сьогодні.
  5. Його батько хоче, щоб він став лікарем.
  6. Ми сподівалися, що він приїде в середу.
  7. Вчитель змусив нас вивчити вірш напам´ять.
  8. Ми примусимо його прибрати кімнату.
  9. Повідомляють, що наступної неділі у Львові буде наукова конференція.
  10. Що примусило вас іти туди в таку погану погоду?
